LOOK FOR FLIGHTS
Where do you want to go? My latest obsession is Skyscanner.com, a miraculous site and mobile app where you can look for cheap flights pretty much everywhere in the world. Look for specific places and dates, or just browse. If you love to travel, it’s a great way to waste time in the doctor’s waiting room, or at your kid’s sports practice. You can enter airports such as LAX or John Wayne and then tell the app to show you every cheap flight to everywhere from there, any time — and it will. Warning: It’s highly addictive.
Manny, Moe and Jack want you to save some money at Pep Boys by using their coupons, including one right now for a $19.99 Quaker State conventional oil change, or $20 off a synthetic one. Sweet, right? And note that if you sign up for the shop’s loyalty club, you get this price all the time, as well as other coupons and special offers. Learn more here: pepboys.com.
wildart1211 – 12/10/02 – Photo: Michael Goulding / Orange County Register – A child at Glassell Child Development Center in Orange seem to be walking through the “Land of the Giants” (actually it is a statue from the Pep Boys Auto Parts stores of Manny, Moe and Jack that is for sale at one of the stores along the street)while walking up Glassell St. Tuesday. The children at the Head Start school which is part of Orange Children and Parents Together do daily “walk abouts” through the community to explore the world around them. The “Stop” sign is used when the group crosses the street.
I want you to know that the interesting Broad Museum in downtown LA, filled with billionaire Eli Broad’s collection of icons of contemporary art, has just released a new batch of free tickets for the month of September. Admission to the main galleries are always free, but the tickets go really fast. This museum is across from Walt Disney Concert Hall, which also offers free tours. If you want to see the “Infinity Mirrored Room” exhibit, get there first thing in the morning because it’s by sign-up only and it gets full. Note that kids like pieces such as Jeff Koon’s life-style porcelain “Michael Jackson and Bubbles.” Location: 221 S. Grand Ave. L.A. Learn more: thebroad.org
Shopping fans, take note: This upscale shopping mall in Newport Beach is offering “50 days of Fashion Island” specials right now until Sept. 16, in honor of its 50th anniversary. Deals range from special Starbucks creations (oh, joy) to 50 percent off manicures and ice cream to deep discounts on merchandise. Deals change every day, you can see the entire list online. Location: 401 Newport Ctr. Dr. Learn more: shopfashionisland.com
FREE ECLIPSE VIEWING
We won’t have total daytime darkness here in Southern California, but you can still see the upcoming solar eclipse for free. Astronomers at Cal State Fullerton are offering a free public viewing starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 21 (note, that’s a week from this coming Monday). A solar eclipse is a rare occurrence, when the moon’s shadow moves in front of the sun. If you want to look through CSUF telescopes, head over to the lawn on the south side of Dan Black Hall, off Nutwood Avenue. The eclipse will last from 9:06 a.m. to just before noon, with the highest percentage of darkness — around 70 percent — at 10:21 a.m. CSUF experts will be available to answer questions. Important note: There won’t be any extra parking on campus. It’s the first day of fall semester and parking will be a zoo, so ride the bus and get there plenty early.
TAKE A FREE CLASS
Take a free boxing fitness class in Rancho Santa Margarita with former Super Middleweight Champion fighter Gary “Boom Boom” Ballard, a certified personal trainer. Workouts suitable for men, women and teens. Group classes are offered Monday through Saturday, and you can get a free one if you call and mention this column. Location: Ballard Boxing Fitness, 30085 Comercio, RSM, inside ProSport Performance. Learn more: ballardfitness.com or 714-914-3316.

The first 25 people in line at the grand opening of the new Poke Me location in Irvine will get one of 25 swag bags, starting at noon on Friday, Aug. 18. And one person will win free poke for a year. And – hold your breath – there will also be a Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting. In case you’ve been living underground for awhile, the trendy poke (poh-keh) is flavored cubed fish served Hawaiian style, often raw. Location: 14370 Culver Drive, Irvine in the Heritage Plaza.
